Additional Information:

While there are countless Chinese kids for adoption, the changes in the rules and regulations associated with the adoption process over the last few years has made it significantly harder to adopt kids from China. These new, stricter regulations affect everyone looking at international adoption. Parents now have to meet highly specific residency, past and present family and marital status, income, age, and health requirements along with agreeing to a criminal background check prior to even considering any of the Chinese kids for adoption. In this article, we are going to delve into the personal, family and marital status requirements needed if you are looking to adopt kids from China.

Among the many, many new regulations set forth to limit the international adoption process, your current and past marital status now plays a major role in whether or not you can proceed with the potential adoption. Parents also need to look into other personal and family factors before adopting. Such factors include:

  • Only a married couple (defined as a man and a woman) may look at Chinese kids for adoption, adopting the child jointly of course
  • The couple must have been married for a minimum of two years
  • However, if either person has been previously divorced, then the minimum requirement increases to five years of marriage
  • Either party may only have a maximum of two previous divorces (for example, if you or your spouse has been divorced three times, then the couple cannot adopt kids from China)
  • The potential adoptive family must have less than five children who are under the age of 18, but older than one year
  • However, those looking to adopt a special needs child are exempt from this rule
  • Despite the strict adoption rules regarding marital status, single women may adopt a special needs Chinese child

Other specific personal requirements include:

  • Both parties must demonstrate good moral character and they must have a long history of honorable behavior
  • Neither party may have abused alcohol, unless he or she can provide significant evidence that he or she has been sober for a minimum of ten years
  • Neither party may have any sort of criminal background, which includes, but is not limited to any of the following:
  • Sexual abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Abuse or abandonment of children

So as you see, China has become rather strict with who they let adopt kids nowadays. Whether you see these rules as being absurd or long overdue, the main thing to remember is that they have been put into place for the safety and well-being of the children waiting for adoption. Parents should not be turned off by these regulations; rather, they should feel better knowing that China's main priority in regards to adoption is the children. This ensures that only the best individuals are allowed to adopt kids from China.
